Out My Back Door: Elk River flows through backyard
By FRANCES VANLANDINGHAM
As I step out onto my back porch I am greeted by the sights and sounds of water running over the rocks as Elk River makes it way through my yard. This beautiful little river is born high in the North Carolina mountains where pure, cold water gushes forth from the rocks and races down the mountains. It seems to run and play and frolic as a young child or animal might do, just happy to be here. It slows to a sedate, civilized pace as it travels through the little town of Banner Elk and seems to commune with the college students that linger on its banks.
The river continues on through fields and farms until it comes to the little community of Elk Park where it puts on a spectacular show as it falls from high cliffs to form the Elk Park Falls. It journeys on through forest and fields to the Tennessee State Line where it enters the Cherokee National Forest and puts on another show by leaping from the cliffs again to form the Twisting Falls. A few miles down stream it passes through my yard on its way to Elk Mills where it joins other rivers and streams to form the Watauga Lake.
The view from back doors and backyards is a fascinating topic, and I look forward to reading what other people see in their backyards.
