School board to vote on fencing, scoreboard donation
By Ashley Rader
The Elizabethton Board of Education will meet Thursday night and will be voting to accept the donation of fencing and scoreboards that will be used to create baseball and softball fields at T.A. Dugger Junior High School.
It is on the agenda to accept the donation from Michael Whitehead from East Tennessee Sports Complex. If approved, the fencing and scoreboards will be moved from the sports complex to TAD to create the new ball fields. The creation of the ball fields will mean the students do not have to leave the campus for home field ball games. The fields would be located on the east side of the school’s campus.
The system’s policy on donations states that if the value is $1,000 or more the donation has to be presented to the board for approval. Also, if the donation would have major costs for installation, maintenance or a continuing financial commitment it has to be presented by the director of schools’ office to the board for their consideration.
Also on the agenda relating to the donation is an approval of the architect’s assessment of the cost to redesign and renovate the eastern side of the TAD campus to house the baseball and softball fields. Architect Tom Weems completed the assessment.
The final agenda item relating to the new fields is approval of naming the new fields the “Michael D. Whitehead Athletic Fields” if the donation is accepted and the fields are constructed.
Also on the agenda will be a request for approval of revisions to the Graduation Requirements Policy to reflect the new credit unit requirements that will be required of high school students. The revisions list the requirements required of each student based on the year they entered high school. Every class from this year forward will need 28 credit units to graduate. The students graduating this year are required to have 22 credits, this year’s junior class is required to have 24 and this year’s sophomore class needs 26 credits.
Another potential change in the policy is that if special education students complete their individualized educational program and all of the coursework requirements for their grade they will receive a regular diploma. Those that complete their IEP but not the coursework requirements will receive a special education diploma at their graduation.
Other items on the agenda include the approval of the 2012-2013 school year calendar, approval for the school system to pursue district accreditation through AdvanceED (SACS) for the 2012-2013 year, the purchase of food items for the cafeterias and leases on two copiers.
The school board meets at 6:30 p.m. at Elizabethton High School in the media center on Thursday.
