“As the season has gone, we always have forfeits,” Elizabethton coach Curt Malyar said. “So when we come away with a dual meet win, considering the number of points we give away, I’m always very proud of my guys. Daniel Boone, they work hard.
“They’re good competitors, so we’re always happy to take these wins when we can get them.”
Recording first-round pins for the Cyclones were Stephen Frazier at 182 pounds and Nick Malyar at 138.
“Stephen did a good job,” Coach Malyar said. “I like it. It’s wrestling.
“My team and I, we don’t take any individual for granted. They’re all here to wrestle, and we treat everybody as a competitor who is out there to win the same as we are. You always like to see the guys step up there.”
Elizabethton’s Dalton Callahan pinned Will McCurtt in the third round at 145 pounds. Callahan was leading 8-3 at the time.
“He did have to earn that one,” Coach Malyar said.
At 220 pounds, the Cyclones’ Tank Williams came up short 4-2 in double overtime to Trevor Shropshire. That match was 1-1 after regulation and 2-2 through one OT.
“He did a good job,” Coach Malyar said. “Unfortunately it didn’t go his way this time. That happens. That’s why we wrestle.”
Logan Buck, at 160 pounds, recorded a 6-0 decision over Sam Hall.
“It was a good match,” Coach Malyar said. “He had to work hard. That kid was tough.
“Even though he did out-score him pretty significantly, it was still a hard-fought match. You always like to come away with a win, and he did.”
Frazier pinned Adam Allison. Malyar (26-1) pinned Dakota Kirk.
At 170 pounds, Elizabethton’s Marvin Acres won by forfeit. At 295, Aaron Somers was leading 1-0 before pinning Dylan Freeman in the third round.
At 152, Brandon Taylor dropped a 9-6 decision to Caleb Raff.
There were double-forfeits at 195, 113 and 120. Boone registered victories by forfeit at 126, 132 and 106.
“They’re doing fine,” Coach Malyar said of his wrestlers. “It’s just good to get the dual meet, and get them some more experience and some more practice. That’s what we’re here for.
“I’m proud of all of my guys. I thought they did a great job today.”
