Strong finish lifts Hampton frosh to win over Patriots

By

BLUFF CITY — Squandering a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, Hampton’s freshmen regrouped with the basketball game on the line.

The Bulldogs prevailed over Sullivan East 69-60 on Monday night at the Patriot Palace.

“A few times during the season we’ve had games where we’ve been up and we lose focus,” Hampton coach Lucas Andrews said. “Then we come back. This group right here is real good about keeping their composure, staying with it and not giving up when things go the wrong way.”

East (5-6) pulled within 56- 54 with less than two minutes remaining. Dalton Carden scored, and Austin Cornett converted off a steal to stretch the lead to six with a minute to go.

Cheyenne Camillo turned a three-point play, and scored again. Suddenly the Bulldogs (13-3) had the outcome in hand 65-56.

Camillo totaled 25 points and 10 rebounds.

“Obviously he’s getting good minutes on the varsity, and he plays most of the JV games,” Andrews said. “So he’s the one we go to when we need some.”

Cornett added 13 points, six boards and seven steals.

“He’s starting to come along,” Andrews said. “The first of the season, just a freshman, then he’s starting to come along and get good minutes on the JV. Now, with the injuries on the varsity, he’s going to have to step up and play varsity a few minutes. But all in all he’s bought into what we want him to do.”

Tyler Moody contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Carden had 10 points and two steals.

Matt Guy came up with seven points, four boards and three steals. Ty Roberson chipped in five rebounds and two steals, while Dylan Holtsclaw also made two steals.

Hampton was 13 of 19 at the foul line. The Patriots were 11 of 15 and held a 41-36 edge on the glass.

East got 19 points and 10 boards Lucas Grindstaff. Logan Littleford tossed in 15, Toby Echevarria hauled in 11 rebounds, and Garrett Wright hit 13 points.

The Patriots surged to a 16- 11 advantage in the first quarter. Camillo stuck a put-back, scored again, and Cornett nailed a 3-pointer to propel Hampton ahead 18-16 heading in the second quarter.

That period began with a bucket from Moody, and a three-point play from Camillo. An 18-0 run saw the Bulldogs rolling 29-16.

A Carden 3-pointer made it 37-23 at the break. East pulled within 37-35 in the third quarter following a 12-0 flurry.

Hampton bounced back, triggered by a Moody put-back. Malone Hill drained a 3-pointer and Hampton was back up by nine.

Camillo’s 3-pointer gave Hampton a 49-39 advantage through three periods. Camillo hit another 3-pointer and Guy scored. The Bulldogs led 55-41, before the East rally.

“All of the rest of them — there’s no player that is the same on the team,” Andrews said. “Everybody gives us something good.”
