Two charged in Johnson County double murder

By

A double homicide investigation in Johnson County has resulted in the arrests of two Mountain City residents.

Jamie Curd

Officers from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were busy interviewing subjects on Monday and Tuesday in connection to the double homicide reported on Jan. 31 at 128 James Davis Lane in Mountain City. As a result of the investigation, Jamie Lynn Curd, 38, of 2358 Pleasant Valley Road, Mountain City, and Marvin “Buddy” Potter Jr., 60, of 727 Hospital Road, Mountain City, were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Both Curd and Potter were booked overnight in the Johnson County Jail on $200,000 bond each and are scheduled to appear in court on March 7.

On the morning of Jan. 31, 36-year-old Billy Payne Jr. and 23-year-old Billie Jean Hayworth were found shot to death in their home located at 128 James Davis Lane in the Doe Valley community in Johnson County. The couple’s eight-month-old baby was found in Hayworth’s arms when the bodies were discovered, but was not injured. The couple lived there with Payne’s father, who left for work at approximately 5:30 a.m. on the day of the murders.

Investigators from the TBI and JCSD said there was no evident forced entry into the home and it was likely the victims knew the suspects.

“The investigation and evidence revealed that Curd and Potter entered the residence and shot Payne in the head in the bedroom and Hayworth in the head in another bedroom used as the baby’s room,” said TBI Spokesperson Kristin Helm.

Payne’s throat was also cut.

Last year, Payne and Hayworth reportedly made complaints against Potter’s daughter for harassing and making threats against them by telephone and over the Internet. Curd, who is Payne’s second cousin, went to court in defense of Potter’s daughter last year about the accusations.

The eight-month-old baby is now staying with his maternal grandmother.

The murder investigation is ongoing. The murder weapons have not been located.
