Salvation Army Souper Bowl planned Feb. 17 at Holiday Inn
Marking the official end of the football season, The Salvation Army’s “Souper Bowl for the Hungry” will be held on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Holiday Inn in Johnson City. This luncheon, an annual affair for the past 15 years, has become a premiere event in the region, hosting a sell-out crowd each February.
The Souper Bowl always features a well-known and accomplished football figure. Past speakers at this event include Archie Manning, Bart Starr, Gayle Sayers and Ron Jaworski, just to name a few. This year’s speaker is former Denver Broncos Captain and All-Pro linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, who rose from being a college walk-on and 12th round draft pick to a pro career that included six Pro Bowl and three Super Bowl appearances. Considered the NFL’s most versatile player, Karl played all seven defensive front positions in the course of a single game many times. In 2001 Mecklenburg was inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
The Souper Bowl raises awareness of the role The Salvation Army plays in this community and helps raise necessary funding for the homeless shelter and feeding programs of the Corps:
In 2011, the Salvation Army provided the following services in the Northeast Tennessee area:
— Served 78,072 meals to the hungry, valued at $390,360.
— Provided 7,927 boxes of food items to the hungry, valued at $277,445.
— Provided 14,254 nights shelter to the homeless, valued at $285,080.
Platinum sponsors for the event are Food City Stores; Gold Sponsors include Waste Management Inc., First Tennessee Bank, Johnson City Power Board, Road Runner Markets and Wells Fargo Advisors. These companies and individuals have demonstrated their care and concern for the less fortunate in the community and for the mission of The Salvation Army.
