Buffs enjoy record-setting day in pool

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — The Milligan College swim team had a record-setting showing at the 2012 Appalachian Swim Conference Championship meet this past weekend at Union College.

The Buffaloes set a total of 12 individual and six relay school records over the course of the two-day event.

“This meet was the best team effort I have ever been a part of in my career,” head coach Dr. Terry Caldwell said. “It was a total team performance from all the kids on the team, parents and coaches. It was truly impressive. This will be a tremendous spring board for nationals.”

In addition to the school records, Milligan added four new “A” qualifying times for the 2012 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships. Senior Chris Fry hit the “A” time standard in the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:00.68. Fry’s mark was a new Milligan school record.

On the women’s side, Hannah Hubbard qualified in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke with times of 25.95 and 1:02.96, respectively. Katryn McKinney also added an “A” time in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 2:02.51. All three times were school records.

Hubbard also set school records in the 200-yard back stroke with a time of 2:17.80, and in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:19.08. McKinney hit the school record time of 5:30.18 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Buffaloes saw Evan Alfano grab a third-place finish in the 100-yard breast stroke with a school record time of 58.27. Alfano also broke the school mark in the 200- yard breast stroke with a mark of 2:09.36.

Laura Ault swam a 57.74 in the 100-yard freestyle to set a new school record, while MariKate Walker set the new school record mark in the 100-yard fly and the 200-yard fly with times of 1:03.65 and 2:20.70, respectively.

In the relays, the Buffaloes saw the women set school records in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays and the 400-yard medley relay. The Milligan men recorded school records in the 400 and 800 yard free relays.

The Buffaloes will return to the pool at the 2012 NAIA Diving and Swimming National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 1-3. Milligan has 14 swimmers qualified for the event.
