Autopsy to determine how Mt. Carmel man died in river
KINGSPORT (AP) — Police in Kingsport say they don’t suspect foul play in the discovery of a man’s body in the Holston River.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine whether 41-year-old Billy J. Scalf of Mount Carmel drowned, as presumed.
At about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, peopled who live near the north fork of the river called 911 and reported hearing a man yelling for help, according to the Kingsport Times-News. Officers arrived and saw Scalf in the water, but he didn’t respond to them and seemed confused.
The Kingsport Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team searched for him until about 2 a.m. Friday and then suspended the search because of thick fog. Scalf’s body was found Friday morning.
Authorities said Scalf had been staying at an apartment near where the incident occurred.
