than 50 pounds of medication during the Drug Take Back event.

Police Chief Matt Bailey said residents took 53.75 pounds of unused, unwanted and expired pills to the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Saturday.

“I consider the program to be a huge success,” Sgt. Willard Johnson said. “The event allows people to rid their home of dangerous prescription drugs which can fall into the hands of individuals who sell or abuse them.”

Johnson, who was one of several officers to participate in the program, said residents seemed to be pleased that they can safely dispose of the medication without having to throw it in the trash where someone could potentially find it.
