Rescue workers extricated an Elizabethton man who had driven his work vehicle off the road, down a steep slope, and into a rock face – despite what police said were the man’s best efforts.

Authorities said Joey Brent Greene, 54, 923 Folsom St., tried to fight off emergency personnel as they tried to remove him from the wreckage of his Tri-City Air Conditioning Co. van, which crashed into a rock formation in a creek bed off of U.S. Highway 19E on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Brad Proffitt, an apparent head injury may have caused Greene to act against his better interests.
