Adult summer reading program begins Thursday

By

With the summer reading program for children already in full swing, the adult summer reading program at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library is set to begin on Thursday evening.

The LitWits adult reading group is sponsoring “Summertime: Read, Relax, Renew!” adult reading program events at the library during July and August.

The first session of the adult summer reading program will be held on Thursday, July 12, from 6-8 p.m. The sessions will feature guest speakers who will talk about different activities that can help readers to relax or renew during the summer. The attendees will also still have the chance to discuss what they are reading and to get suggestions from others.

The first session will feature Daphne Eggers, who will speak about yoga and fitness. The next session will be on Monday, July 16, and will have Judy Addington, who will make a presentation on essential oils and massage. Jenna Zeiler will make a presentation called “Journey to Russia” on Thursday, July 26. In August, the adult summer reading will have three sessions and a finale. The first will be on Monday, Aug. 6, and will have Beth Street talking about cooking with herbs. On Thursday, Aug. 16, Kathy Campbell from Northeast Community Credit Union will make a presentation on financial safety, avoiding scams and identity theft. On Monday, Aug. 20, Jeanne Cope will talk about herb gardening, and the finale will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30. All sessions are from 6-8 p.m. at the library.

This is the second summer that the ECCPL has hosted an adult summer reading program. Last summer was the first time the library had also included the adult readers in the summer reading activities. After last year’s summer reading program ended, the LitWits reading group was formed. The LitWits generally meet once a month at the library.

The children’s summer reading program also continues to meet. Today, Ranger Jacob from Roan Mountain State Park will bring his slithery friends at 10:30 a.m. and at 4 p.m. On July 17, the Mr. Bill and Bodie Show will be at the library at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on July 24 there will be a special guest, also at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The preschool group meets on Wednesdays. On July 11, the theme is Ship Ahoy! All About Boats! On July 18, the theme is Duck Sock Hop and is a day to wear crazy socks. On July 25, the theme is To the Beach!

The End of Summer Finale Celebration will be on July 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Edward’s Island Park pavilion. The celebration will have games and the young readers will receive their prize packets and reading certificates.
