Ahead at the break, Cyclones can’t hold off Boone

GRAY — Elizabethton took a hard fought 3-2 advantage into halftime of Friday’s boys soccer match at Nathan S. Hale Stadium against 3-A Daniel Boone, but it was all downhill from there. The Trailblazers struck for four goals in a 10-minute, second-half spree to defeat the Cyclones 6-4 despite losing two players to card infractions.

The Cyclones (3-4) got a goal in the eighth minute from senior Rafael Teixeira to give EHS a quick lead, but 10 minutes later the ’Blazers responded with a goal from Ryan Elswick on a left-footed shot that beat EHS goalkeeper Luke Broyles to his right and evened the score at 1-1.

Senior Joey Stahl struck for a goal in the 28th minute as the Boone defense shifted toward Teixeira in the middle and Teixeira sent a nice pass to Stahl on the right wing, just inside the box and he blasted one past ’Blazers keeper Mason Curtis to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.

Once again Boone had the equalizer with Elswick scoring again with an assist from Adam Edwards — this coming in the 38th minute of the first half.

EHS took advantage of a mistake by the middle line of the Blazers and freshman Isaac Fife took possession at midfield and sent a pass to Teixeira who sliced between two Blazers and put a point blank shot on Curtis to give EHS a 3-2 lead that held up until the break.

“We felt pretty good about things with a 3-2 lead at halftime,” said EHS head coach Bill McClay. “We had some things happen in the second half that took us out of what we were doing early. We didn’t possess the ball for any length of time after that.”

Early in the second half play got chippy and Elswick was sent to the ’Blazers’ sideline with a yellow card, which should have been a break for the Cyclones. However, Chris Dickerson stepped up with two second-half Blazer, the first coming in the 67th minute that tied the game at 3-3 and the next giving Daniel Boone its first lead of the match at 4-3, just a minute later.

“Those two quick goals were a product of miscommunication,” said McClay. “Those types of things are fixable. We got to 18 minutes into the second half and we really hadn’t done anything, then it was ‘Katie bar the door’ when they got those two quick ones back to back.”

The ’Blazers continued to apply pressure to the EHS defense with a pair of close calls that Broyles was able to turn away, but in the 70th minute Edwards got himself onto the scoring ledger with an assist from Dickerson and gave Boone a 5-3 lead.

“I challenged my boys at halftime to play our game and we would get four goals in the second half,” said ’Blazers head coach Steve Sessis. “The kids made a prophet out of me as we did score exactly that many goals. Our goal was to isolate number 19 (Teixeira) and quit feeding number 22 (Bobby Holt) in the middle of their defense. We accomplished both of those things and it’s a good thing because 19 was giving us fits with his speed and his good right leg.”

The ’Blazers got another goal in the 73rd minute when Edwards shot was stopped by Broyles, but the rebound slipped out and Uriel Tovar capitalized and scored to make it a 6-3 game.

Senior Ashton Stevens got a goal in stoppage time, but Boone’s Zach Marshall was hit with a red card for throwing an elbow at a Cyclone player on the far sideline and was ejected. Coach Sessis was apologetic to coach McClay afterward for the incident, which marred an otherwise well-played contest.

“I don’t coach that kind of play and I won’t tolerate it from any of my players,” Sessis said.
