The couple married in Decatur, Ill., on Nov. 11, 1945. They started dating when Phyllis was 14 and Jack was 15. They never went with anyone else.
Jack joined the U.S.Navy at age 18 and served aboard the USS Colorado during World War II. His ship participated in bombing campaigns at Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Marianas. He witnessed the signing of the treaty in Tokyo Bay that ended World War II.
He called Phyllis in late October of 1945 to say he had an upcoming leave, which left 11 days to plan the wedding.
Phyllis bought the first dress she could find, since no one was making bridal dresses during World War II. She also borrowed five dresses for her bridesmaids. She still keeps her wedding dress on display in their home.
The couple honeymooned in Chicago at the Edgewater Beach Hotel for $10.50 a night.
For their 66th anniversary, they were treated to a four-day trip to Savannah, Ga., by Debra and Dave Wortman.
