The family of Richard and Sylvia Campbell recently honored the couple on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. A celebration party was hosted by the couple’s three sons, their wives, and eight grandchildren at the First Christian Church in Elizabethton.
Richard and Sylvia were married in this same church on September 2, 1961, the year Sylvia graduated from Milligan College and Richard graduated from East Tennessee State University. They have since lived in Johnson City, Knoxville (twice), Decatur, Ala., Baltimore Md., and for 35 years in Stone Mountain, Ga. Richard retired from Zurich-American Insurance Company and Sylvia retired from Cintas Corporation. They moved back to Elizabethton in 2007 and currently reside in the family home at 101 East K Street.
Members of the original wedding party who attended the celebration were: Billy Joe and Nina Campbell of Oak Ridge, Charlie and Judy Golding of Elkin, N.C., and J.L. Norris of Hampton.
Sylvia and Richard celebrated the full weekend with family. Their oldest son, Vince and wife, Ruth Campbell, and their daughter, Grace, live in Madison, Ga. Their middle son, Lance and wife, Ilah Campbell, and their five daughters, Shelly, Joanna, Marina, Charity and Zoe, live in Duluth, Ga. The youngest son, Adam, and wife, Jana Campbell, and their two children, Eva and Ivan, live in Cincinnati, Ohio. Several cousins from the Shaw, Campbell and Lumsden families joined in the celebration. Their niece, Linda Hardin, came from Alcoa to celebrate with them.
Friends from Elizabethton High, Hampton High, Milligan College, First Christian Church, the neighborhood and several community groups celebrated with Richard and Sylvia. As the Campbells said, “It is a blessing to be back in Tennessee, surrounded by family and friends, for such a happy occasion.”
