Annual Pig Roast a 16-year tradition for Hampton’s Piney Grove community
For 16 years, just as the weather starts to turn cooler and the trees on the mountains begin to change color, Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church has held an annual Pig Roast open to the the entire community.

Attendees of the annual Pig Roast at Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Fellowship Hall in Hampton make their way through the buffet line.
“It’s just good fellowship all around,” said Dannie McKinney, the man charged each year with preparing the pig. “We don’t ever charge for anything. Everything here is furnished free. It’s just an open fellowship for whoever wants to come.”
McKinney and other folks in the Piney Grove community of Hampton know their barbecue. They also know how to host a big bash featuring music, fellowship and, of course, lots of slow-cooked pork. The soft strumming of guitars and the joyous singing only associated with gospel music could be heard as soon as guests stepped out of their vehicles in the parking lot at the Piney Grove FWB Church Fellowship Hall.
