Attorney says children’s death in hot car a ‘tragic accident’
SMYRNA (AP) — The mother of two young children who died after being left inside a hot car in Smyrna appeared in court, and her public defender said she is distraught over their deaths.
Samantha Harper was arrested last Thursday after police say her 3-year-old and 2-year-old toddlers died in a car parked in the family’s driveway while she was asleep inside the home.
The Daily News Journal reported Harper’s appointed attorney, Gerald Melton, told the judge during a court hearing Thursday that Harper is struggling to come to terms with what happened and called the deaths a “tragic accident.”
Melton said Harper has been placed under a suicide watch at the Rutherford County jail.
Harper faces two counts of especially aggravated child abuse. A preliminary hearing was set in the case.
