The name “Badcock Home Furniture & more” might not be familiar to most Carter County residents.

It will be now.

After doing about $200,000 in renovations to the former Fred’s location in the Elk Crossing Shopping Center, Badcock opened a furniture and appliance store Monday. The 18,234-square-foot store, which has seven employees, is between Auto Zone and Amigo’s Mexican Restaurant.

Store Manager Shannon Young said many people in Northeast Tennessee are not familiar with Badcock. He said the furniture chain had been in business for 104 years and has locations across the southern United States. “The stores are starting to branch out more to the north and the northeast,” Young said. “They are planning to open a new store in Greeneville next year.”
