For only the second time in 10 years, Carter County failed to send a boys basketball team to the state tournament. Aside from not making the elite eight, it was a banner year for several schools.
Elizabethton, Unaka, Cloudland and Hampton combined to win 89 games. The Cyclones, Highlanders and Bulldogs won 25, 23 and 22 games respectively. The Rangers came close with 19.
So picking a first and second team wasn’t an easy task for our panel of Star sportswriters. And we had to burn some midnight oil in doing so.
One thing that achieved total agreement was player-of-the-year honors. That goes to Unaka senior wing Billy Bales.
