Brenda Byrum seeking to be next member of county school board
With election day in Carter County only hours away, voters in the 1st School Board District are preparing to select their next representative on the county’s board of education. Local resident Brenda Byrum is one of three candidates seeking the four-year term in Thursday’s election.
Byrum, who has lived in Carter County for the last 16 years, said her path leading to the decision to run for the school began with an automobile accident when she was a teenager. “I was in a car crash when I was 16,” said Byrum. “I ended up being out of school for a long time because of my injuries. When my father took me back to school to ask for a homebound teacher, we were told that I had already failed. He agreed to sign the papers to allow me to withdraw from school when that happened. It took me another 15 years to think I was good enough to get an education.”
