A one-point loss to Virginia Intermont on Jan. 8 in Bristol was the turning point of the Milligan Buffaloes’ men’s basketball season. Since that loss the Buffs have won eight — including seven straight at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse — and lost just one in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
On Saturday afternoon, Milligan (10-6 AAC, 16-8 overall) avenged that earlier defeat with a 98-93 win over the Cobras behind a huge team effort. Junior guard Mickey Woods scored a team-high 26 points with junior post Morgan McLeod adding 22 points and 15 rebounds.
“Coach told me and Chris (Ellis) to not let them touch the ball,” McLeod said of the challenge presented by VI seven-foot Russian post Max Sorokin. “He challenged us pre-game saying they are a great rebounding team and my main goal for the night was to accomplish that. We are a family and this is my family away from my actual family. We pick each other up and, unlike a lot of other teams, we are there for one another.
