Bulldogs put up 42 third-quarter points to end Unaka’s challenge

Like a ticking bomb that just awaited detonation, third-ranked Hampton exploded with a 42-point third quarter and blew away the Unaka Rangers 94-71 on Thursday night at VanHuss-White Gym in Watauga Valley Conference action.

Senior guard Cody McClain celebrated senior night with a 24-point effort to lead the Bulldogs (6-0 WVC, 19-2 overall) in scoring. McClain had six points at the break but dropped three consecutive 3-balls on Unaka to open the third period — and foul trouble by the Rangers’ big men doomed an upset bid on this night.

“We definitely had to step it up on defense,” McClain said. “When we picked up the intensity the shots started to fall. Usually I’m the assist guy, but tonight I was fortunate enough to be able to get a few good looks.”
