For the first time in league history, Carter County American Little League will send one of its teams into uncharted waters since joining the association in 1950.
The 16-18 year-old ladies softball team will leave on Thursday to take part in the Senior League Softball Southeast Regional to be played in Clearwater, Fla.
The team defeated Jefferson County in a best two-out-of-three event recently to win the state championship, qualifying them for the automatic berth. Should the Americans emerge as the top team, from there they would play in the World Series — which will be televised by ESPN2.
Many of the names and faces on Carter County’s roster are familiar ones to local softball fans. Elizabethton, Happy Valley, Johnson County, Unicoi County and Sullivan East are the five high schools that will be represented.
