Carter County brush, forest fires contained; official says arson suspected

Firefighting officials suspect that arson may have played a role in a brush and forest fire that have, for the past two days, kept emergency personnel busy.

On Monday night, firefighting crews from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service and local volunteer fire departments contained two fires – one in the White Rock Mountain area of Roan Mountain, near Old Railroad Grade Road, and the other in the Clarktown area of Tiger Creek.

Although the Forest Service’s law enforcement and investigations unit will be looking into the incidents, North Zone Fire Management Officer Guy Street said that arson seems like the most likely cause.

“We strongly suspect arson,” Street said. “But the law enforcement personnel will be looking into that.”
