County investigators say an Elizabethton man told them that he was intoxicated and can’t remember the events of a day near Christmas that led to his being charged with raping a girl younger than 12.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Randy Bowers alleged 18-year-old Charles Harley Davis of 233 W. Elk Ave. raped a girl at least four times on a day around Dec. 25, 2012.
Bowers said the child’s parents approached authorities, prompting the investigation.
“During our interview with him he admitted that he was intoxicated and doesn’t recall anything,” Bowers said of Davis, choosing his words carefully so as to not identify the girl.
A Carter County grand jury charged Davis with a four-count presentment in March on rape of a child, a class A felony.
He was arrested Tuesday night by city police and booked into the Carter County Jail under a $200,000 bond.
Bowers said he should appear in Carter County Criminal Court at a date in the near future, but that date has not yet been set.
