East Tennessee State University now has a ninth program among its TRIO opportunities. TRIO programs are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The new grant will provide $250,000 per year for the next five years, and will assist 60 students in seven high schools located in Carter, Johnson and Unicoi counties. These low-income students must have the interest and capacity to pursue higher education and be the first in their families to attend college.
TRIO staff will meet with the students on a weekly basis at the schools to review progress and offer encouragement and advice on career exploration, as well as about college admissions and financial aid procedures. Online and at-school tutoring will be available. The staff will offer services through each student’s high school graduation, including payment of the fee required to file admission forms at one school.
