Cause of roadside fires unknown

Elizabethton firefighters said the cause of a series of small fires that slowed traffic along Highway 67 during Monday’s evening commute might remain a mystery.

Elizabethton Fire Department Capt. Todd Montgomery said two engines and a brush truck were dispatched between 5 and 6 p.m. to put out at least 10 different blazes in the grass on the road’s shoulder between the Milligan Highway and the double bridges.

“We’re not sure what started them,” Montgomery said. “It could have been a cigarette, a vehicle backfiring or they could have been intentionally set. It’s just hard to tell.”

He said once firefighters arrived, the small fires were extinguished in a matter of minutes.

Because the flames were contained close to the guardrails and there was no property damage reported, Montgomery said there will likely not be an investigation.
