Center offerings kids triathalon

By

With more than one third of children in Tennessee being obese, the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Department is always looking for ways to encourage healthy lifestyles in area children.

With that in mind, The Memorial Park Community Center announces its inaugural “Dive, Ride and Stride Kids Triathlon” set for Saturday, Aug. 24.

“This is a great way to introduce children to the triathlon world at a young age,” said Kelly Finney, program coordinator at the center. “We know triathlon is a growing sport, and this event is going to be fun for all ages and give kids a real sense of accomplishment when they finish.”

The swim will begin at Legion Street Pool, the bike and run portions of the race will be on closed streets and parking lots around the Keystone Neighborhood and racers will finish at the Memorial Park Community Center. There will be three race divisions; ages 8 and under, ages 9-10 and ages 11-12.

“We want this event to be fun for the kids. We are hoping for lots of sponsors, door prizes and entertainment and games after the race,” Finney said. “And we’re still looking for volunteers to help with timing and keeping kids safe on the course.”

The race begins at 9 a.m. and participants are asked to be there no later than 8:30 a.m. to set up his or her bike in the staging area. Every biker must have a helmet. Early registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 9. Early registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt and medal. There will be no race day registration.

Entry fee before Aug. 9 is $15 per child and $25 through midnight on Saturday, Aug. 17. Parents can register their children online at www.johnsoncitytn.org/parksrec or in person at Memorial Park Community Center between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Packets will be available Friday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., Johnson City.
