Chill, multiple events cut into downtown crowd

Hundreds of trick-or-treaters of all ages could be seen throughout historic downtown Elizabethton Wednesday as they searched for enough candy to fill their treat bags.

Downtown merchants gave out goodies in the annual trick-or-treat celebration from 3-5 p.m.

The cold weather put a chill the trick-or-treating, with a noticeably smaller crowd at this year’s event.

“We were way down this year,” said Downtown Business Association President John Bunn. “I think we might have hit 1,000 or 1,200 trick-or-treaters, when we usually have 2,000 to 3,000. The colder weather might have had something to do with it, but there are also a lot of alternate events happening at the same time. It did go well. I wish more merchants would have stayed open to participate and hand out candy.”
