Carter County Citizens in Action President Scott Snell, left, presented Elizabethton Carter County Animal Shelter Building Committee Chairman Mike Barnett with a donation of $1,083 to be used in the construction of the new animal shelter.

Carter County CIA President Scott Snell said the group held a fundraiser during the Carter County Car Club’s weekly Cruise In during September and the first of October.

Anyone who made a donation to the new animal shelter was entered in a chance to win a limited-edition Glo-Mad race car set. LaDonna Williams of Elizabethton was winner of the race car set.

ECCAS Building Committee Chairman Mike Barnett said the donation would allow the committee to buy items for the shelter that were eliminated from the original bid in order to lower the cost of construction. The additional funds will be used to buy four sky windows for the shelter.

“The sky windows will provide natural light for the animals,” Barnett said. “It is important that the pets have natural light, especially the cats. They do better when they have natural light.”

Construction on the new animal shelter is tentatively scheduled to begin Nov. 1. The low bid selection of Landmark Construction of Johnson City was unanimously approved by the Elizabethton City Council and approved by a majority of the Carter County Commission.

Snell said this was not the first fundraiser for the Citizens in Action.

Last Christmas, the CIA held a fundraiser for Assistance Resource Ministries. He said they are now considering possibilities for this year’s Christmas fundraiser.

The Citizens in Action meet the third Thursday of the month at the Carter County Courthouse at 6 p.m.
