The Elizabethton Board of Education was able to approve a group of time-sensitive bid renewals during a called school board meeting Monday morning.
Bid renewals for food items and miscellaneous cafeteria supplies from Sysco Knoxville, miscellaneous cafeteria supplies from Summers Hardware, bread and grain products from Sara Lee Bakery and milk and dairy products from Mayfield Dairy were all unanimously approved by the board.
The contracts run from Feb. 1, 2013, until July 31, 2013. Board member Catherine Armstrong questioned why the bids were set for half-year increments instead of a whole year.
Finance Director Beth Wilson explained the half-year terms allowed the school system to get the best prices on the items in the bid. She said prices could be adjusted to match the consumer price index, which could give the system a better price mid-year than what was set at the beginning of the school year.
