Christmas and bells: Jingle bells. Sleigh bells. Silver bells.

But those aren’t the only bells of Christmas. The Salvation Army bells may be the most familiar bells that make an appearance this time of year.

Earlier this week, members of the Elizabethton Kiwanis and Rotary clubs joined together to ring bells for the Salvation Army. Members of the clubs took two-hour shifts to collect donations for the charity on Monday and Tuesday.

Rotary Club member Jim Richardson said the joint effort has been a 15-year-long tradition for the civic organizations.

“We look at ways to get the Carter County community involved,” Richardson said. “It’s an easy way to get the civic clubs out and show that we do care and we are doing what we can.”

To gather volunteers for the event, the Kiwanis and the Rotary passed a sign-up sheet around at the meetings and collected 20 volunteers to ring the bells.

“We encourage members to volunteer and to do this,” Richardson said. “It is truly heartwarming on behalf of the bell ringer.”
