Hunter and Central battled back and forth in a contest that was decided in the final seconds. A free throw hit by Dakota Gobble with 4.8 on the clock gave Central a 52-51 victory and the Tri-County tournament small schools championship on Thursday night at Bayless Gym.
“We knew that the man to have on the line tonight would be him,” Central head coach Lamont Barnett said of Gobble’s final free throws.
“This makes our fourth time playing Hunter this year and we knew they were a good ball club and well coached. We knew it would be a dog fight,” he said.
Free throws by Hunters Curtis Tester tied the game at 51-51 with 10 seconds left on the clock, but a foul put Gobble on the line and the game in the hands of the Comets.
Central was led by tournament MVP Trystan Godsey who finished with 21 points.
