Wooden picnic tables, some covered in clothes of oranges, yellows and whites, were spread throughout the shelter. Every time the wind blew, leaves tumbled to the ground and littered the patio in more shades of orange and red.
But on Saturday, as Roan Mountain State Park hosted its 10th annual chili cook-off, it wasn’t the colors you could see that sent senses into overload. No, on this day, it was the smells and tastes from boiling pots of chili that filled the October air.
