Council backs rules for city liquor sales

Elizabethton’s City Council approved ordinance changes on first reading Thursday to allow the location of package stores in the city limits after voters approved a referendum allowing the businesses.

City voters approved the sales during the municipal election on Tuesday, but before liquor stores could open in Elizabethton, ordinances had to be changed.

One of the ordinance amendments approved by council established regulations for liquor stores. The ordinance also details the requirements for a certificate of compliance from the city, which must be obtained before any state permits will be issued to the business.

Council also laid down rules limiting where stores could locate and the hours they can keep.
