Future liquor store owners in Elizabethton might face additional requirements after city council members discussed amending a city ordinance to include limiting the number of liquor stores allowed.
Council members held a workshop on the issue Wednesday afternoon.
When council passed the first reading of the ordinance governing liquor stores in the city, the number of stores was unregulated, which meant anyone who met the permit requirements could open a store.
After the passage of the first reading, city leaders started to question whether the number of liquor stores should be limited to make the most of the sales tax revenue available to the city.
