County lieutenant recalls his most memorable moments

About 10 years ago, Lt. Jeff Markland of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department said he was driving along Dennis Cove Road when he observed smoke coming from a house.

“I was on routine patrol and I saw smoke coming from a house,” said Markland, who was a deputy at the time. “I stopped and actually heard a woman inside screaming. I was able to get inside the front door and was able to get her out to safety.”

Markland said the incident was probably his most memorable for his nearly two decades in service in Carter County. He noted that the home was filled with smoke, but he did not go through fire to reach the woman.
