“Cows are notoriously languid creatures and make their way home at their own unhurried pace.”
This quote, from the British website Phrases.Org, provides background for the phrase “till the cows come home.” In this case, the cows in question had no choice but to be languid and unhurried. Nevertheless, the cows have finally come home.
The Wilbur Dam cows, which had been stranded on a narrow stretch of land along Wilbur Lake, were safely recovered Sunday afternoon.
Kelly Bowers, the cows’ owner, expressed relief that the animals had finally been returned to him.
“We’re very happy to have them home,” Bowers said, “and they’re tickled, too.”
