Cyclones enjoy team win on mats

With the region and potential state appearances ahead for Elizabethton’s wrestling team, the Cyclones were looking for a bit of momentum in their final home dual of the regular season.

It was a mixed bag of results for the ’Betsy grapplers, who battled Morristown West without a head-to-head loss — a season first — yet succumbed to a larger David Crockett team Monday at Treadway Gymnasium.

“We had a good showing tonight (against Morristown West),” said Elizabethton coach Donnie Shipley. “I was really surprised at our effort in that match. We were kind of even on forfeits then we won more matches head-to-head and that helped us tremendously.

“With Crockett, we gave them 18 and they had to bump guys around to win the match. That says a lot about where we are. We wrestled them earlier in the year and they beat us badly. To come back, they have to bump guys to make sure they won the match and speaks highly for us.”
