The plan was simple. Get out to a good start, make the fewest mistakes and answer the bell when Unicoi strikes.
Check. Check. Check.
Following their game plan to a tee, Elizabethton jumped on the regular-season champion Blue Devils in the first inning, limited their miscues in the field and responded in every facet of the game en route to Thursday’s District 1-AA championship 5-3 victory over Unicoi at Milligan College.
“I’m definitely proud of these guys starting all the way back to the last week in August, guys coming to early morning workouts,” said Cyclone coach Joe Nix, whose claimed his first district title and the program’s first since 2007. “Everything culminates here for now. Enjoy it, but we’re still not done. We’re starting our second season here and we’ve got to take care of what we can take care of starting next week.”
