If video replay was used in high school, two plays during the final minute might have been reviewed. And they would probably been upheld due to indisputable evidence. The Cyclones had two bang-bang plays go their way, allowing them to escape with a 57-55 win over Johnson County inside of Treadway Gymnasium.
The final one came on a gusty defensive play from junior standout Tyler Nichols. The Longhorns had taken their final timeout with 19.2 seconds remaining in the game. They placed the ball in J.R. Speed’s hand hoping he could create an open shot for either Brian Dempsey or Dalton Timbs off the dribble drive.
With everything covered, Speed drove the lane and banked in a shot with 0.7 seconds showing. But the potential three-point play and game-winner was wiped off after Nichols took the charge.
