Deputies: Meth lab suspect assaulted pregnant girlfriend

A man arrested and charged with cooking methamphetamine is now facing a charge of assault against a viable fetus after, authorities said, he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend.

Investigators say Scottie Allen Birchfield, 39, was cooking methamphetamine in a van. At the same time, law enforcement officers said, Birchfield was a live-in boyfriend of Angela Remedious Marley, who told officers she was in fear for her life and that of her unborn child.
