In light of public scrutiny over a new educational initiative, members of Carter County Schools’ administration discussed how it could improve the learning process.
On Thursday afternoon, administrators discussed the implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative into the Carter County School System during a meeting of the Carter County Board of Education.
The discussion began with Director of Schools Kevin Ward, who said he wanted to address several “misconceptions” about Common Core, starting with its origins.
“One of the big misrepresentations is that this is coming from the federal government … and that the states are basically being forced,” Ward said. “Common Core was developed by a group of leaders from all types of industries. (They set) standards that, hopefully, will give us the ability to get our children on the cutting edge.”
Though Ward has heard these misconceptions from members of the community, he added that some of them were coming from his employees.
