District of Columbia decriminalizes marijuana

Smoking a joint is now comparable to a parking ticket in the District of Columbia after the city council voted to decriminalize marijuana on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Reuters reported that the measure passed 11-1 in the first of two votes to take place. The next vote is expected to take place during the council’s next legislative meeting on Feb. 18, and still requires Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray’s approval.

“If the measure gets final approval, Washington would join 15 U.S. states and a handful of cities that have removed the threat of arrest for possession of small amounts of marijuana,” according to Reuters.
