Update: Slain Elizabethton couple found by family friend


The Elizabethton Police Department reported that the bodies of Michael and Melissa Griffin were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds by a family friend on Sunday afternoon.

According to the EPD press release, the friend arrived at the residence to visit the Griffins shortly before 2 p.m. After discovering the bodies, police report that the friend “immediately” dialed 911 to report the incident.

Police reported that the investigation has determined that the incident took place between 3 and 3:30 on Sunday morning. Authorities added that a neighbor told them they heard what could have been gunshots coming from the home at around that time.

At this time, police say they do not believe any third party was involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.


An Elizabethton couple was found dead in their homes after police arrived to investigate a possible death.

On Sunday afternoon, officers with the Elizabethton Police Department found the bodies of Michael Griffin, 49, and Melissa Griffin, 43, dead from apparent bullet wounds inside their home at 1508 Garden Road.

In a press release, EPD Capt. Joy Markland said that, at this stage of the investigation, there is no indication that a third party was involved in the Griffins deaths.

The incident is under investigation.

    May you run free and rest in peace, Melissa. Melissa was loved and supported by a large online community of women runners and had just run her first Half-Marathon. Well done, Melissa. What a horrifying and heart-breaking tragedy. I’m so sorry for her family and her children.
