Elizabethton’s Charlie Mattioli and the Marine Corps have one thing in common. They’re each looking for a few good men.
The difference is Mattioli wants them age 65 and over to help organize a senior softball league.
‘I wasn’t here 8-10 years ago in the golden days when they had the 8-team league,” said Mattioli on Wednesday. “But two years ago I got to play in a couple of tournaments with some guys from this area. Ever since then it’s been tough finding places to play. We’ve not been able to put a team together. Most of the guys that played years ago are no longer playing.”
Mattioli said that local softball players like Bill Weddle and others travel to Georgia and other border states to play because of the current problem. That why he wants to bring softball back to the Tri-Cities.
