EPD officers honored for saving man

Four Elizabethton Police officers were recognized by City Council after saving a city man’s life during a medical assist call 4A Recog-Con Sept. 21.

EPD Capt. Jason Shaw, Officer Jordan Ensor, Officer Matt Sexton and Sgt. Patrick White have been nominated for the Life Saving Award by Chief Greg Workman for their efforts during the call. They also received certificates of recognition from the Carter County Rescue Squad.

Workman said the officers were dispatched to a call at 113 W. H St., where Richard “Doc” McKinney had gone into cardiac arrest. His wife, Janie, had been doing CPR waiting for the rescue squad to arrive at her home.

After the officers got to the home, they took over CPR and Shaw used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to give two shocks to McKinney to restart his heart. He was then transported to the hospital, where he was released two days later. He is now at Ivy Hall Nursing Home receiving therapy.
