Sometimes, what’s good for the soul is also good for the sole.
More than 200 students in Carter County have received new shoes just in time for Christmas, thanks to a $15,000 grant received by Hale Community Ministries.
HCM Director Becky Brumitt said the grant has provided shoes for students in need at Little Milligan, Hampton, Valley Forge, Cloudland, East Side and Harold McCormick elementary schools and Hampton and Cloudland High School.
On Monday morning, Brumitt and volunteer Glenda Carr visited East Side Elementary School to deliver brand new shoes and socks to close to 25 students.
East Side school counselor Jason Elliott said the community outreach provided by the grant was much-needed at the school, which has a high percentage of students on the free- or reduced-price lunch program.
“Teachers will come to the counseling office and say the students need shoes or clothes and will point some of it out to us,” Elliott said. “Some teachers take it upon themselves to buy their students shoes if they see they are needed.”
