A former church treasurer has been indicted on a charge of stealing what one law enforcement official said was “in excess of $100,000” from Beck Mountain Baptist Church.
On Monday, Silas Edward “Eddie” Sams was arrested and charged with theft of property over $60,000, the maximum amount punishable by law.
On Nov. 8, a Carter County grand jury indicted Sams on the felony charge. Almost half a year before, however, the Carter County Sheriff’s Department had started an investigation into missing funds at the church.
“The church found discrepancies and brought it to our attention and filed the report,” said Sheriff Chris Mathes. “We began the investigation into looking at those reports. In working with church officials, we identified several withdrawals which totaled, over several years, in excess of $100,000.”
