Elizabethton High School graduate Stephanie Egeler will have the whole Duke University band marching to the beat she sets when she takes the lead as one of the band’s three drum majors this fall.
This isn’t Egeler’s first time leading the band: she was drum major for the Elizabethton High School Betsy Band during her senior year.
When she is not setting the tone as drum major, she plays the mellophone.
“Being the drum major at Elizabethton definitely did help me,” she said. “Being in the band helped prepare me for the college band and for college in general. The way Mr. (Perry) Elliott leads the band teaches great life lessons. He talks about promptness, being prepared and he is always saying things like ‘Success is in the details. Pay attention to details’.”
She said the previous experience as the drum major in high school gave her a better understanding of what it takes to run a marching band.
“It gave me great confidence in myself as a leader,” Egeler said. “I do think it helped in the interview process. When I was asked how I would handle certain situations, I had similar experiences to reference from my time being the Elizabethton drum major.”
