Former prisoner of war speaks about his experiences

Erwin native George Hatcher spoke Monday about his experiences of being held captive by the Germans during World War II.

The veteran spoke to senior citizens and school-aged teenagers Monday morning at the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center about his experiences as a prisoner of war in Germany.

“I am one of the Erwin Nine,” Hatcher said regarding the truths of his life. “I am a 92-year-old veteran. I am a deacon at Love Chapel Christian Church. I am a teetotaler. I do not use alcohol, drugs or tobacco. I take regular exercise every morning. I live by the golden rule and first commandment.”
